This week (6-12 February) is National Apprenticeship Week and we’ll be shining a spotlight on some of our past and present apprentices. With the current skills shortage and the challenge of encouraging more women into construction, we’re proud to have welcomed our first female painting and decorating apprentice last September. We caught up with Leila Jones to find out how she’s getting on.

Why did you decide to go down the painting and decorating route?

I left school with no qualifications, so my options were quite limited. My brother and uncle already work in the trades so they inspired me to go down a career path that was more hands-on.

I went to college for two years and completed my Level 1 and Level 2 certificates in painting and decorating. This gave me a good introduction to the field but I knew that I wanted to get real world experience. I learn a lot better by seeing and doing, and I think that’s the great benefit of an apprenticeship.

Can you tell us more about your role?

I’m on a three-year apprenticeship programme which will eventually give me the skills and knowledge to become a fully qualified painter and decorator. Every day is different, but I mainly paint and decorate properties, so this could be communal areas and tower blocks, empty homes or going into customers’ homes.

How are you settling in?

I’m really happy to have found a place at Livv and I’ve loved my time here so far. My team has made me feel welcome from day one. I fitted in straight away and I get along well with everyone. It’s a great team to work in.

How do you feel about working in a male dominated industry?

To be honest, it hasn’t fazed me at all. I get stuck in like the rest of them and they don’t treat me any different just because I’m a girl. I know what I’m capable of and if I’m ever unsure, I’m not afraid or ashamed to ask for help. They’re all really supportive of me.

While I’m the only female trade-based apprentice in the business, I don’t see it as a challenge or a disadvantage at all. I see it as an opportunity for me to set the bar.

What advice would you give to other young women considering working in a trade-based role?

I know that women might feel uncomfortable joining a trade because it’s so male dominated, but you can’t let it be the reason you close off the opportunity. If you really want to do something, you need to jump in at the deep end and give it a go.

What’s the best thing about being a painting and decorating apprentice?

Making a difference to our customers. Whether it’s a single mum or an elderly grandma that I’m doing a job for, I’m helping to make their home a nicer place to live. Putting a smile on their faces feels really rewarding.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

Once I’ve qualified, I’d love to stay here at Livv. It’s a great place to work. I think encouraging more women into construction is so important and I’d love to inspire and pave the way for other young people like me.
