We’re continuing the National Apprenticeship Week celebrations today by shining a spotlight on Joe Clarke. Joe joined us a 19-year-old Plumber Apprentice, and over the past 18 months, he’s flourished in his role and made the most of the opportunities that’s come his way, including leading the Knowsley Apprentice Network. We caught up with Joe to hear all about his experiences so far…
Hi Joe! Can you tell us about your apprenticeship?
I started at Livv in September 2024 on a four-year apprenticeship programme – three years in plumbing and one year in gas. I spend four days a week on site and one day at college, where I learn the theory behind my day-to-day work and take part in practical sessions. I’m currently studying towards my Level 4 Plumbing & Heating qualification.
What have you been up to so far?
I’ve worked across both Responsive Repairs, so being called out to plumbing emergencies, as well as on Empty Homes, where we carry out full bathroom refurbishments and installations. I’ve worked with five different plumbers, all of whom have their own tips, tricks and ways of working. Learning from people who are so experienced and knowledgeable in their trade has been really valuable.
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve been down at Knowsley Heights draining out water systems in the unoccupied flats. This is a major project that relies on close collaboration across several trades and it’s been great to be involved.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
When I was at school, apprenticeships weren’t really talked about. It was all “go to uni” and “make sure you complete your UCAS application”, but none of that interested me. I’m much better working with my hands than sitting behind a desk, so I looked into trade apprenticeships. I chose plumbing because it also gives me exposure to the gas side, meaning I’ll gain a wider range of skills and become multi-skilled in the future.
Can you tell us about the Knowsley Apprentice Network and your involvement in that?
The team at Knowsley Works were looking at setting up an apprentice network for people across the borough, and Mandy and Lou from the L&D Team asked if I wanted to get involved. I agreed straight away, and now myself and Alex from Fusion 21 lead the group together.
What happens in these sessions?
They’re a space for apprentices from organisations all over Knowsley to come together for a couple of hours every few months. We chat, share and solve problems together, while also building skills and having a laugh. We take the feedback we gather back to employers too, particularly for those who might not feel comfortable raising issues themselves. The response has been really positive so far and we’ve got loads of ideas that I’m hoping we can put into action this year.
Why is it important to you that this support is available?
At Livv, we’re fortunate that we join as part of an apprentice cohort, so we always have people we can relate to and speak to. But in a lot of organisations across Knowsley, an apprentice might be the only one in the business. Having this network gives people the chance to connect with others in a similar position, share experiences, challenges and successes – whether that’s related to work or college assessments – and make sure everyone is getting the most out of their apprenticeship. I love that I can play a part in that.
How has your apprenticeship helped you grow?
My apprenticeship has given me real-world experience that’s helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Over the past year and a half, I’ve worked alongside several plumbers as well received consistent support from my managers. They’ve helped me build practical skills and confidence by sharing their knowledge and advice that I’ll carry with me throughout my career. Working in customers’ homes has taught me the importance of strong customer service, being professional and taking pride in my work.
Being involved in the network has also developed my confidence and communication skills. Leading meetings and standing up in front of 15-20 apprentices isn’t something I ever thought I’d be doing. Livv has given me the opportunity and support to grow.
What’s the best thing about an apprenticeship?
Learning on the job, gaining real skills and earning money at the same time. For me, apprenticeships are the way forward, and I would [and have] recommend them to anyone leaving school or unsure about their next steps. I’m looking forward to completing my qualification in 2028 and, hopefully, securing a permanent role here at Livv.
Livv Housing Group is one of the largest apprenticeship providers in the Knowsley borough. Over the past 15 years, we have welcomed more than 250 young people into the business, helping them develop skills for life while building sustainable careers. Our next apprenticeship vacancies are due to open in summer 2026.
